As we hurried across the icy bridge, the first whistle was heard. A firework exploded into a tri-color circle as big as the night sky, practically on top of us. We stopped where we were and turned our faces to the sky. More fireworks quickly followed. Booms echoed off the nearby grain factory and restaurants, creating a sound like an erratic heartbeat. I looked over at him as he looked up and watched color blink on and off his features. Then I looked up again. Red. Blue. Pink. Gold. Rockets. Circles. Waves. Fairy Dust.
They were just bursts of light, but just for a minute, they were more.
