A Christmas cactus is not a cactus at all. And some are not even "Christmas" related at all. If the plant flowers in November, it is a "Thanksgiving cactus." If it blooms near the new year, it is a true "Christmas cactus." If it blooms in March, it is an "Easter cactus." But, not one of them is a real cacti.
Still, most people call their plant a Christmas cactus and wait expectantly for it to bloom close to Christmas. And when it does not, and the bloom comes and goes before Christmas, people sigh sadly and think, maybe next year. Never once realizing they've built their hopes on a cactus that isn't even a cactus but an Epiphyte. Or a maybe a Schlumbergera. Take your pick. Call it what you will. The plant remains what it is and people keep hoping for something that will never change.
