Hold On To That Feeeeeeeling.

(WARNING: ALL OF THESE LINKS MAKE NOISE, so if you're at work you may want to plug in headphones)

By now you've probably gotten the jist of this. Erikka asked me to write about a taboo or guilty pleasure, so here goes.

Hi, my name is Allie, and I love cheesy music.

Outwardly, I'm a bit of a music snob. I recently got into an argument with my friend Steve* about Nirvana and Foo Fighters. Steve seems to think that since Foo Fighters is an extension of Nirvana, they should totally be included in the recent arbitrary list of the best bands of all time.

And I'm all like, "What kind of crazy talk is this Foo Fighters extension of Nirvana crap? Foo Fighters is Dave Grohl's commercial pop-crap project, and Nirvana was something. At least at the beginning. They were the real deal, man. You can't compare the two just because one was started by a member from the other. It's like saying Jefferson Airplane and Starship are practically the same band."

And then Steve is all like, "Foo Fighters isn't pop. Wikipedia calls them alternative rock."

And I'm like, "If you're going to use Wikipedia as a source to back up your argument, I can't have this conversation with you."

But here's the thing, if I'm ever lucky enough to catch a little Starship on the radio, I'm in heaven. I am always game to belt out the theme song to Mannequin, or We Built This City at the top of my lungs. As long as no one is around to hear it.

Sure, I have the indie local college radio station on preset in my car, but that doesn't mean I like it. That's the station I play when I'm carpooling somewhere with someone else. When I'm by myself, I am rocking out to Journey, Styx, Howard Jones, Foreigner, Whitesnake, or Mr. Mister. When I say BOC, I don't mean Boards of Canada. I mean Blue Oyster Cult (Oh, no, there goes Tokyo!).

If I danced to it in my Laura Ashley jumper at a junior high school dance, I secretly love it, know all the words, and need to sing along.

This rule also extends to my peach Gunne Sax dress and early hip hop at friends' bat mitzvahs. You're on a mission, and you're wishin' someone could cure your lonely condition . . . What can I say, it speaks to me. And isn't that really what music's about anyway -- that feeling you get when a song you love comes on the radio -- the memories it triggers?

So, now that I've 'fessed up to my big guilty pleasure, I'm going to crank up the music and get down. Don't judge me, okay? You've got some skeletons on your iPod. I know you do. Do, however, feel free to judge Steve for putting Foo Fighters on the same level as Nirvana. That's totally different.

*Name changed to protect those with less embarassing music tastes than mine.

Journey is my ringtone, and I have ABBA's Supertrouper lodged firmly in my head at this very moment. I am also an unabashed fan of The Monkees, and when I'm feeling blue I blast Boston's Amanda (for obvious reasons). I don't pretend to be a music snob because I couldn't pull it off. Allie, I feel your pain.

I think there is no problem whatsoever in having pleasure in music that you liked when you were too young to know better. That's probably why you'll never list "The Jonas Brothers" as a guilty pleasure, because they are the mistakes of another generation.

But I must confess that I kind of like "Big Me."

Oh wow...I so could listen to all of that! I was just listening to Journey's greatest hits the other day and I love all the "old classic" 80's stuff...Now I feel old! ;)

I have similar tastes in music. Though, I have to disagree with you on the Foo Fighters. I'll take them over Nirvana any day.

Put me in a store which plays 70s soft rock and I know the lyrics to all the songs. When no one's home it's often on my radio. I'm a total sucker for Carol King, whom I met a few years ago. She's really short.

Love the Gunne Sax reference ...classic!

We've been playing a lot of Alice Cooper at my house lately--my 2 year old loves it. And, yes, I have tons of classic rock in my past as Styx was one of my favorite bands way back when.

But, in the car, I still listen to college radio pretty much exclusively and I'm always discovering new bands that way.

Allie - we might have been separated at birth.

I LOVE Starship! "We Built this City" is my go to karaoke song. :-)

One of my dorky fave songs of all time is "Mr. Roboto" by Styx. Some would argue this is the worst Styx song on the planet but I disagree. It's genius.

My Gunne Sax dress was light blue, and I saved up for months and months to buy it. But seriously, I've been forced to progress in my musical tastes because all those bands you mention remind me of my ex-husband. Especially Journey cuz he had a Journey video game where you had to help the band members escape the crazy fans and fly away in their space ship. For real.

Wow, and people tell me I have sh*tty taste in music. With that said, I commend your courage for coming forth and I do not judge. I talk about the music I like on my blog all of the time and I don't give a rat's ass who thinks their tastes are loftier than mine. Keep your head high.

haha very good to see you fess up like this.

My guilty pleasure is Dr Hook - I just love it. And ELO too. But like you, I mostly pretend to be cool.

But today is the anniversary of the death of the greatest rock n roller ever so we only play Elvis in this house today!
