Everyone is aware of this Bible verse – “Dust to dust” (Genesis, 3:19) but a more accurate phrase might be “Sunlight to dust.” Because before the dirt, there was Sun. (There was also water and dark first, but I am focusing on the Light part here) And after the Sun, came plant life then animals, then humans.
* aside * I believe in evolution and a God, but just writing out the story of Genesis a new point leaped out at me – even an evolutionist can see some truth in this story. For regardless of how everything was created, the roles that followed creation established a food chain as written above, a chain of interdependence. (might not even the scientific kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species taxonomy have evolved from the same line of thought?)
Two wonderful things made their way to me today. One is a quote, the exact last line of Michael Pollan’s book, and the other is a poem by E.E. Cummings that I randomly picked to read. Both shared sentiments similar to the idea that from the sun which we all came, thus shall we return. What a neat idea that has room for evolution, Darwin, God, and creation alike.
“…however we choose to feed ourselves, we eat by the grace of nature, not industry, and what we’re eating is never anything more or less than the body of the world.”
- Michael Pollan
“when god lets my body be" By E.E. Cummings
when god lets my body be
From each brave eye shall sprout a tree
fruit that dangles therefrom
the purpled world will dance upon
Between my lips which did sing
a rose shall beget the spring
that maidens whom passion wastes
will lay between their little breasts
My strong fingers beneath the snow
Into strenuous birds shall go
my love walking in the grass
their wings will touch with her face
and all the while shall my heart be
With the bulge and nuzzle of the sea
great quote finds! i like your new layout too, great pic!
